Sailing Hats Reviews

Tilley Mens Womens LTM6 Broad Brim Sun Hat

Let’s start our review by looking at a hat that can be worn by both men and women. Available in multiple colors, including Khaki/Olive, Natural/Green, Grey, Olive, Cloud Blue, Off White, Black, and Silver Pine, we were quite excited to discover whether or not it is worth the price.

The first thing that we were quite happy about was that this hat comes in a variety of different sizes, ranging from 6⅞ to 8⅛. In our opinion, it is all about lightweight construction and fancy designs when it comes to sailing hats. That is exactly what we got with this Tilley hat.

Although not a major detail, the drawstring closure goes a long way when it comes to adjusting this hat according to your preference. Apart from the fact that the design is unisex, we also found that it can be worn by both teenagers and adults regardless of head size. The entire manufacturing process is done in Canada, which goes a long way in terms of its overall quality.

We were impressed by the fact that you get a limited warranty on all built-in defects. Made out of premium nylon, it is quite sturdy and something that you can definitely rely on for everyday use. In terms of maintenance, there isn’t a lot to worry about, as it can be both washed by hand or put in a washing machine.

Make sure that the machine is on the lowest setting to ensure that the hat isn’t bleached or deformed during the washing process. Keep in mind that it should be air-dried if you want to ensure that it stays in tip-top condition. Most importantly, it is highlighted by a UV protection of 98%, which allowed us to stay free from sunburn even though we spent the whole day out on the water.

Our main concern was related to the price, as it is quite expensive when compared to similar sailing hats. Still, given the quality and the fact that it can be worn by both men and women, we consider it to be a good choice.

  • Premium nylon
  • 98% UVA blockage
  • Hand/machine washable
  • Dual drawstring closure
  • Available in multiple colors

  • High price compared to similar options

KATYDID Boat Hair Don’t Care Baseball Cap

Moving on with our list of sailing hats, we were very interested to find a product at an affordable price that still offers good value. With a fancy “boat hair don’t care” print, it is an innovative women’s hat that we were eager to test. Here is what we discovered.

As soon as it arrived, we were quite impressed with how stylish this cap was. There are several color variants, including Black/Mint Weaves, Black/Pink Weaves, Grey/Red, Mint, and Pink. However, the Teal/Pink Weaves is the one that we went for. Consisting of polyester and cotton, it is made according to the latest industry standards regarding longevity and simple maintenance.

It is good to know that the manufacturing process is done in the USA, which is a quality guarantee on its own. While we found that it isn’t a typical hat but rather a cap, the snap closure still allows for versatile use. The best point about it is the curved design that goes a long way when it comes to preventing forehead sunburns and offering better visibility.

The single size that it comes in doesn’t limit who can wear this cap, but keep in mind that it isn’t suitable for machine washing because that might warp or deform the cap to where it has a weird fit. For this reason, we would recommend hand washing (cold temperature) and air drying for optimal results.

Overall, although there is room for improvement in terms of the design, we consider it to be a good solution for those who are on a limited budget.

  • Affordable price
  • Snap closure
  • Great visibility
  • Comfortable

  • Not machine washable

Sunday Afternoons Sport Hat

There are few better ways to spend your weekend than going out sailing. With this in mind, we ordered the Sunday Afternoons hat to see whether it can offer adequate protection on a hot and sunny day.

It is available in both medium and large sizes, and it comes in a variety of different colors, such as Coral Kaleidoscope, Teal, Cream/Sand, Caribbean, and even the attractive Amethyst. Although the manufacturer advertises that it is a woman’s hat, we found that it can be worn by men, as well.

The most important point of it has to be the 5” neck cape that is accompanied by a 4” wide brim to offer spectacular prevention of UV ray damage. According to the description, it offers 50+ UPF protection, which is the best you can get out of a sailing hat. We were happy to see that, much like the Tilley, this one is highlighted by a fine strap that allowed us to adjust sizes.

It is always great to know that, although we spent the whole day out sailing, we weren’t feeling too hot at any point in time. This is mostly due to the spectacular ventilation that the Sunday Afternoons hat offers.

Our major concern is the fact that the flap could be somewhat bigger. However, we found that the efficient sun protection and attractive design make up for that and justify the price of this product.

  • UPF 50+
  • Has a 5” neck cape
  • Incredibly comfortable
  • Attractive design
  • Adjustable strap

  • Flap could be bigger

Coolibar UPF 50+ Men’s Kaden Hat

If you already decided to go ahead and invest in high-quality sailing equipment, then it is good to have some fancy clothes on you, as well. This particular hat comes as one of the most attractive models on the market. It is available in Khaki, Natural, Smoke Grey, and a variety of different sizes.

When we came across this product, our first thought was that this Kaden hat is quite expensive. Although we found that its quality is great and that you are sure to get years of continuous use out of it, we still know that most people simply won’t spend this much on a hat. According to the manufacturer, the main justification for the high price tag is the specific combination of cotton and polyester canvas that makes for a premium and long-lasting construction.

Much like the aforementioned product, this one is made to block up to 98% of harmful UV rays. Also, with an elastic closure, it supports versatile use and can be worn by both teenagers and adults. What we were most impressed by is the fact that you can easily flatten it for simple storage and easy transporting.

Additionally, the wooden toggle that is set at the end of the strip plays an essential role in stabilizing the hat in strong wind. It is safe to say that our experience was flawless. Still, it is pricey, and that’s the main reason why we can’t recommend it to everyone.

  • Premium structure
  • Adjustable chin strap
  • Blocks 98% of UV rays
  • Versatile
  • Collapsible

  • Pricey for some

Muryobao Women’s Ponytail Summer Mesh Hat

At the end of the list, we are presenting a product that is highlighted by a fancy and innovative design that seems great for women of any age. With a ponytail hole at the back of this cap, we found it to offer spectacular functionality.

When compared to all the sailing hats/caps that we have tested so far, this one probably offers the most vivid designs. Colors range from classic Orange, Pink, and Pure Black to Pure Purple, Pure Watermelon Red, and Sky Blue (which is the one we went for).

It arrived in great condition and features a drawstring closure that allows for certain adjustments, as it fits heads with a circumference of 21 to 23 inches. Offering fine sun protection and the innovative ponytail hole for added breathability, this cap can support you throughout a long day of sailing.

Highlighted by mesh sides and a collapsible structure, we found that it is suitable for traveling, also. The main issue that we had is that the stitching and the overall construction simply isn’t very sturdy. However, the price that you are paying is much lower than with the previous products, which is why we consider it to be a worthy choice.

  • Great price for good quality
  • Breathable
  • Ponytail hole
  • Vivid designs
  • Foldable for easy storing

  • Flimsy stitching

Wrap Up

Coming up with a final verdict isn’t the easiest task to do here. Our personal favorite has to be the Tilley Sailing Hat because it is unisex, highlighted by a premium structure, and comes with a dual drawstring closure. As our second choice, we would go with the Sunday Afternoons Sport Hat for its spectacular UV protection and universal fit.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to the budget you are working with, as well as your personal preference. Good luck, and don’t forget to have fun out on the open water!
